Fishing the Big Lake

November 2, 2008 - 9:05 PM - We headed to the French River to fish along the shore of Lake Superior. Great day to be out throwing spawn sacs into the big Gitch'.

Rock and Water (two)

We headed out to the French River close to 8:00 AM yesterday.  We were to be gunning for salmon and trout.  Andy had done some research earlier in the week on what the salmon and lakers usually will bite on - turned out to be a spawn sac.  I was unfamiliar with such a crude sounding creation.  Think salmon eggs in cheese cloth.  They are about the size of a superball and come in a preserving oil.  They are pretty gross, in my humble opinion.  Using chicken livers for fishing catfish was strange and the spawn bags ranked right up there with them.

Like usual, we dragged along an assortment of cameras and associated gear.   A vacuum-bottle of coffee, some sandwiches, donuts and yogurt were also lugged.  Several rods, tackle and knives, too.  We met Andy at the river shortly after 8:00 AM.  He was pumped to give the spawn bags a try.

The rods we brought with were our standard river fishing rigs.  These proved to be too small for the big waters of the Gitch.  There were others fishing the Lake with eight feet long rods.  Massive tools of fisherying.

The weather was damn near perfect.  We stayed until close to noon.  We did not catch anything, but we did take nearly 150 photos.  I also hurt myself something-fierce by slipping on a rock.

Perhaps, I will post more on the outing - just not now.
