Noisy Ice on the St. Louis River
March 8, 2009 - 7:40 PM - We took a drive to look at some tax forfeited property, and we ended up down at the summer fishing location on the St. Louis River.
In my never ending quest to "do things" - latest being the setting up of a vineyard in grape-friendly north eastern Minnesota - we were out looking at tax forfeited property to see if there was any thing viable that would sustain grape production. We drove past the last pile of bog that the county is trying to get rid of because of unpaid taxes, and we decided to continue to Midway Road and take a left - we were heading to our summer river fishing location on the St. Louis River.
I have not been out fishing at all this winter. From not having the right gear for winter fishing to having a lack of time - I just have not made it out. Spring will be here within a month, so it is a nice time to get out and look at the ice and snow that should soon be departing (note: we are currently under a winter storm watch for Tuesday of this - currently Sunday as of the writing - more snow first, then things will taper off and get warmer).
Now would actually be a great time to get stocked up on hooks and things before we head out in early April.
The one creepy thing that had slipped my mind was that even though ice is "solid," it is still moving slowly. As we stood on the shore-ice, out in the middle of the channel you could hear creaking and cracking and loud "ga-dunk" noises from the submerged side of the ice.
